GTA 6 vs GTA 4
GTA 4 was the first HD-universe GTA: a tighter, story-first Liberty City in 2008. GTA 6 is the next numbered game after GTA 5, set in Leonida. The useful comparison is tone, city, and how much the series has opened up since Niko Bellic arrived in Liberty City.

Liberty City versus Leonida
GTA 4 is a vertical, borough-style city: Algonquin, Broker, Dukes, Bohan, and Alderney. It is the series’ New York stand-in. GTA 6’s confirmed setting is a whole state — Leonida — with Vice City as the urban center. That is closer to how San Andreas used a state than how GTA 4 used a single metro area. Official district lists for GTA 6 have not been published.
One protagonist versus two
GTA 4 follows Niko Bellic. Two downloadable episodes later shifted the camera to Johnny Klebitz and Luis Lopez, but the base game is one lead. GTA 6 is built around Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval from the start. How missions split between them is not confirmed.
What “next-gen” meant in 2008 versus 2026
GTA 4 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 and added PC the same year. It was a physics- and animation-led leap from the PS2 games. GTA 6 launches only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Rockstar has shown trailer footage, not a published spec sheet — treat frame-rate, ray tracing, and resolution claims as unofficial unless Rockstar posts them.
Expansions
GTA 4 received two story DLC packs. Rockstar has not announced story expansions, a PC window, or a GTA 6 Online roadmap. Anything about post-launch DLC for GTA 6 is speculation until an official post.
Questions
Is GTA 6 in the same universe as GTA 4?
GTA 4, GTA 5, and the announced GTA 6 setting sit in Rockstar’s HD universe (Liberty City, Los Santos, Vice City as modern cities). Shared-character cameos in GTA 6 have not been confirmed.
Which game is more realistic?
GTA 4 was widely described as the more grounded, less cartoonish numbered GTA. GTA 6’s tone is not officially labeled. Trailers show crime, satire, and a sun-belt setting — not a published “realistic vs arcade” designation.
